What is Walk with a Doc?

Dr. Murthy Gokula, founder of Stay Home I Will, is encouraging Toledo residents to take a step toward better health with Walk with a Doc, a health program that brings doctors and patients together to walk on the 2nd Saturday of every month at pre-determined Toledo-area parks.
Walk with a Doc is a network of walking groups with over five hundred chapters around the world. The goal of the physician-led walking group is to promote hope and health through safe and free walking excursions. Patients can chat with the doctor on a personal level outside the office and gain a better perspective on how to achieve their health goals. Walks are FREE and open to the community and pre-registration is not required. Walkers will enjoy a refreshing, rejuvenating walk with Dr. Gokula and other healthcare professionals, who will answer questions about exercise and nutrition during the Walk.

The Benefits of Walking

The health benefits of walking cover a vast spectrum of medical maladies. Increased heart and lung fitness fights cardiovascular disease, which is one of the deadliest ailments in the world today. Controlling high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes are a few of the other benefits of walking on a regular basis. With these improvements in physical health, the risk of heart attack and stroke is greatly diminished.

Other benefits of walking include muscle strengthening and endurance, as well as better balance and increased bone strength. While walking to build strength, patients also see a decrease in body fat, which contributes to overall well-being and self-esteem.
